The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria has been one of the world's leading botanic gardens and a centre of excellence for horticulture, science and education, dedicated to the conservation, display and enjoyment of plants.
THE BRIEF
The objective of this brief is to design a functional, engaging and memorable annual report. It should deploy a visual language that communicates effectively and imaginatively to the audience, in a way that is in line with the sense of place, the vision, values and purpose of the organisation, creating meaning through typography used and imagery.
THE CHALLENGE
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic happened during 2020, we are refrained from visiting the Gardens to take photos. Therefore, we are required to generate the imagery used in the annual report. The solution is to dingbats, icons, and other extensions provided in the fonts to represent flowers, along with some illustrations that mimic the textures of plants and fungus. The use of soft gradients, neutral colours will give the feeling of looking at a colourful field of flowers and plants through a fogged window. This will communicate the sense of place in a subtle, more abstract and symbolic way, without having to use imagery of actual plants.
